Small Circle Jiu Jitsu

Small Circle Jiu Jitsu

Jiu Jitsu and Jujutsu is the same. This competitive sport began 2000 years ago and no one really knows its true origin. Some say that Jiu Jitsu was part of a myth and it was only during the Edo period when this sport was formalized. During this period, Samurai warriors existed in Japan and aside from their sword, Samurais used Jiu Jitsu for combat. The Japanese people used many ryu or styles of Jiu Jitsu and recently, different countries also made modifications.

Small Circle Jiu Jitsu follows the classical Jiu Jitsu which dates back 2000 years ago but it approximately began in 1944. Wally Jay was the founder of Small Circle Jiu Jitsu and he learned the style from Henry Okazaki. Okazaki studied classical styles of Jiu Jitsu like kosagabe, yoshin, and iwaga. He also studied Hawaiian lua, boxing, kung fu, wrestling, knife fighting (Filipino), and Okinawan karate. Okazaki founded Kodenkan jujitsu but it was not quite popular.

Prior to the introduction of the Small Circle Jiu Jitsu in 1944, Professor Jay studied weightlifting, boxing, Jujitsu, and judo. He finally became a black belter in the Kodenkan Jujitsu by Okazaki. Professor Jay always felt that Jiu Jitsu was missing something and through the knowledge and understanding he gained from Okazaki and other disciplines, he improved classical Jiu Jitsu. After studying judo for two years under his teacher named Ken Kawachi, he was able to come up with the Small Circle Jiu Jitsu.

According to Sensei Kawachi, one can gain greater leverage through wrist action. This is also the key to Small Circle. For several years, Professor Jay modified classical Jiu Jitsu. His aim was to combine and refine or improve all his acquired techniques from the different disciplines. Soon enough, the world of martial arts accepted and even accredited the system. Small Circle is not only used in Jiu Jitsu but it also in other martial arts styles. Professor Jay tested the Small Circle in one of this judo teachings and his team won. During the sixties and seventies, Professor Jay was able to produce team winners and champions in USA, Canada, Mexico, and Hawaii.

Small Circle Jiu Jitsu has ten principles, namely – balance, mobility/stability, avoid ‘head on collisions’, mental resistance/distraction, focus on the possible smallest point, energy transfer, creating a base, sticking control/sensitivity, rotational momentum, and transitional flow. Under the transitional flow, players will also learn about exerting continual pain, creating maximum pain but without dislocating any joint and mobility during transitions.

The Small Circle by Professor Jay is functional and smooth because of the ‘flow’. The techniques used are interchangeable and so the players can different counterattack moves which can surprise the attacker.

It was only in 1987 when Small Circle Jiu Jitsu was officially culminated and recognized. If you want to know more about Small Circle, conduct a simple search online.
