Jiu Jitsu Belts

Like any other form of martial arts, Jiu Jitsu also has belts. Belts have specific ranks depending on their color. In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the belts represent proficiency levels. In order to get a belt, you must spend two to five years of regular practice. However, the blue belt can be achieved in twelve months time if you’re diligent with your practice sessions.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has different associations and federations. The common belts worn are the following –

1. White
2. Blue
3. Purple
4. Brown
5. Black

There are certain associations and schools which give four stripes through the brown belts. The black belts can also have a maximum of four degrees or stripes. This is often given every 3 years and on the 6th and 7th degrees, an individual can wear red and black belts. The grand master degree wears a red belt.

Black belts are the ones who award the ranks to other players. The very first belt to be issued in the BJJ is blue belt. There are also times when the black belts instruct brown belts to evaluate the lower belts in terms of performance. Black belts can be instructors and fighters. A fighter wears a black belt and white band. On the other hand, instructors wear black belts and red bands.

As a BJJ player, you should know how to tie your belt. Belts usually are tied with square knots because it is quite efficient and sturdy. You should learn how to tie the knots because that is also important.

So you see, before you can achieve the highest belt rank, it will take many years of continuous practice and dedication. Beginners are given white belts and if you dedicate yourself in learning the basics of Jiu Jitsu, you will soon earn your blue belt. Advanced techniques are taught as you progress. If you start Jiu Jitsu at an early age, you will grow with it. As you grow older and you make great improvements, you can be promoted to the next belt rank.

Always keep in mind that Jiu Jitsu is not merely a sport. You will also learn many things like positive attitude, traits, and outlook in life. With these things, you can go a long way even if you stop practicing the sport. You will carry the traits with you even as you grow old. Most of today’s Jiu Jitsu players are doing well in school because the instructors and support team teach their students on how to balance their time between studies and other activities.

As you start your Jiu Jitsu classes, you will learn everything you need to know gradually especially about the belts. Once you learn a certain technique, you should not forget it. You have to practice regularly so that you can master it. After mastering a certain technique, you can now learn another technique. A good thing about the Jiu Jitsu classes is that the players can learn at their own pace. There is no pressure and so the individual is free to use his time in practicing and mastering certain techniques.

Jiu Jitsu is a fun way of learning to be a good individual and how to defend ones self. Men, women, children, and teens can enroll in the Jiu Jitsu classes. Just find a good Jiu Jitsu instruction class in your area and enroll.
